Recently my sisters computer took a dive for some unknown reason, resulting in it restarting as soon as windows loads. Same error ever time with the windows 2000 install disc, acpi.sys not present, etc.

A Linux live cd works fine, harddrive functions perfectly in another computer, heatsinks cold to the touch(old northwood p4). Updated bios, swapped ram around, formatted drive, switched plugin and play and the acpi.sys(support?) in the bios on and off in varying combinations.

system specs:
p4 2.6ghz
256mb pc3200
asus p4s800mx
onboard video, sound, networking

May i suggest the following?

load absolute bios defaults
memtest for some loops
run the hard disk diagnostic software included in ultimate boot cd
try another power supply
