I always type in the full name of the executable or dll into google and normally it gives you a pretty good realm of sites to look into the process.
Example:
nvsvc32.exe
http://www.google.com/search?sourceid=navclient-ff&ie=UTF-8&rls=GGGL,GGGL:2006-12,GGGL:en&q=nvsvc32.exe

When I Google a process, I look for the LIUtilities link. They're the ones behind WinTask. It's a decent program.

There is also eventid.net If you have the event ID from Event Viewer you can get more detailed information from that site.
