The artic silver 5 instructions website says to use high purity isopropyl alcohol for cleaning. I have 70% sitting in my cabinent. Is this good to use, or should I be using something more pure?

high purity would be something >90%. You should be able to get it at a pharmacy.

70% will be fine. There's lots of people who say you need high purity, but little is written about why you really need it. No need for a special trip to the store.

I had no problem finding 91% at Target, so I saw no reason to go with anything less. Just make sure it is fully dry. ;)

I just buy high purity to get a better deal. 91% is easily found at wal-mart for around a dollar. Cheap cheap stuff but works wonders.

70% should be fine, it's just that 90+ is better in terms of being a solvent and it'll dry more quickly, but you shouldn't have any trouble using 70%. Just make sure it's dry!

I didn't have any trouble using the 60% ones, just be sure that it's dry beforehand doing anything else after u use the solution.

Thanks, how long does it take to dry? Do you ussually wait until you see no more moisture?

It's visible when there is still alcohol on there. Just use a lint free cloth to wipe it and it should evaporate in a few seconds.

70% IPA should be all gone in less then 5 minutes. 100% is gone in under 60 seconds with a small amount

Lol I actually use Gunk, it's the only thing that'll get the pads off. Thermal grease and arctic silver i won't, but remember those hard bazooka joe gum pads that use to come on amd heatsinks, the tiny ones? Only thing I can use to get those off were Gunk engine cleaner haha.
