I've got two new HITACHI Deskstar 7K80 80GB SATA-II Hard Disk Drives.

Everest Ultimate 2006 shows them as this:

Field Value
Disk Drive HDS728080PLA380 (80 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)

Field Value
Disk Drive HDS728080PLA380 (80 GB, 7200 RPM, SATA-II)

The first drive is 39 degrees and the other is 37, but they go up to the fourties when under load. Is that normal? Also, how do enable the 3gbps speeds on them?

I've got a bunch of drives in my machine and the 3 that show up in Speedfan report with these temps:
400gig Seagate SATA 41*C

160Gig WD IDE 34*C

and the one I just installed a couple of hours ago,
251Gig WD RE SATAII 3gb/s 70*C ,seems kinda hot compared to teh other two but I think it's because it's not mounted, just sitting on the DVD-RW with the antistatic bag between the two.

I think under 50*C is very safe, so you are good to go.

to enable 3.0gbps speed you need to go the official hitachi site and go to the download section. Find feature tool and download it, you need a floppy or they also give the option to make a bootable cd. You then go into the program and change the speed, make sure your motherboard supports it first or you'll mess the drive up (just letting you know, im sure it supports it if your asking). Have fun!

Have same drive. Mine hover around 36C idle/loaded and max ive it is like 38..Thats with a low-speed 80mm blowing on it. This is in the summer when my rooms always 80f+ too..

EDIT: yeah def keep it under 50, 60 is danger zone. 40 is very good.

Speed fan works good. Also tells you some nice info about your drive if you do an "In-Depth Analysis" (basically puts SMART data into easy to read terms)
