how good is the basic windows speedtester?

it's got my 250gb seagate sata 8mb as a good bit faster than my WD Raptor 36g.. i hope thats wrong.. what a waste of money if it isnt

Its accurate. the 36gb raptors have been surpassed by the last generation of large capacity 7.2k rpm drives. The reason is that the platter density is so much higher that the raptor's extra speed cannot overcome the size of its small platter. Basically, the 36gb drive still has better seek times, but the sustained transfer rate is now crummy.

may I ask: what XP hdd speed tester?! how do you run it?

Something tells me it's the one built into the NV drivers. Run HDTach for more accurate results. And the seek time is more important than it looks.

Absolutely correct. Seek time is still very nice, but I'll take a current gen 7.2k rpm drive over the first 36gb raptor. :)
