I have a sound blaster audigy 2 zs with creative labs 6.1 speakers and play my mp3's through winamp, but the playback only comes out of 2 speakers (front left and right) and the sub. I could've sworn the playback's gone through all 5 speakers before. Am I just remembering wrong or am I missing some config? what kind of setup does one need for 2+ speaker output for tunes?

the sound blaster software will cycle through all speakers and games use all 6 speakers BTW..
thnx in advance!

Have you checked your speaker settings (in Control Panel) to make sure it's not set to "Desktop Stereo Speakers?"

Have you checked your speaker settings (in Control Panel) to make sure it's not set to "Desktop Stereo Speakers?"oh most definitely. it coincides with the sound blaster software, however the sound blaster speakers are 6.1 but windows options only have 5.1 and 7.1. my windows says 7.1 but the SB software is set to 6.1. I can only assume that you think it should be playing through all speakers?

Sometimes it depends on your playback software. I remember I had a SB Live Platinum and when I tried to switch over to Winamp it too only play music out of 2.1 speakers. But for years I used Windows Media Player and I went back to it because it would play at least 4.1. Also games would get the 5.1 speakers to work.

Winamp by default will only play stereo music because that's what music is encoded in. And by default, the stereo music on the audigy only plays on the front 2 speakers unless you either change the configuration or it receives a multichannel signal - such as games.

Besides playing music in creative mediacenter (which I despise) you can also:

Use CMSS in the audigy EAX control panel and set it to stereox2 or stereox3 or another CMSS setting.

You can also get a plugin for winamp which will upmix the stereo channel into multiple channels as well.

Either solution is better than creative, IMO.

Audigy2?
Force CMSS in driver settings.
Problem solved...
No matter what the software wants to, that upmixes the music.
