Yep, as the title implies lets hear what you got. (LETS SEE SOME PICS)
Well for me, my motherboard has 5.1 integrated surround sound, but i dont have a full on 5.1 surround sound system. but i do have altec lansing speakers (four of them + plus a little woofer) which are stereo. I also have a sony mini hi fi system that i have connected to my tv and other components. And some older altec lansing speakers that were lying around. so after messing around for a bit i decided to set these up as 5.1. So for the 4 altec lansing speakers, they are the front speakers. the old altecs, i took one and made it my center. then i took my sony hifi and made that my rear speakers. Since the sony and altec have subs, its an incredibly rich sound considering the mixing and matching of the speakers. its really fun playing counter strike source - you can hear everything from every angle and watching DVDs is soo much nicer. i cant explain. so yeah, i took three seperate systems and hooked em all too to my computer and i now have a ghetto 5.1 system. its great. - pics are posted later in thread.
well thats MY ghetto system. what about you?

They are Polk R30's which I bought at outpost.com / Fry's when they go on sale for around 90 bucks a pair. They sound pretty damn good for the money, great for music and movies when I need to bump it up. :D
haadij404
04-21-2006, 12:15 AM
damn $90 a pair. i might just get those. but my amp is 6 ohm. do you know what those operate at? they look real good to me, and Polk is a well respected audio company...let me know.
edit: nm, i did some research on them...they operate at 8 ohm. could i still use it on my 6 ohm amp? im pretty sure itll work but it wont sound good...any ideas?

How many watt is your amp? it should work fine, just won't pump out as much power as using 6 ohm speakers.

Your fine.
If your amp is rated to drive 6 ohm loads, then 8 ohm speakers will be fine. Most amp's are rated to drive down to 4 ohms, and the esoteric can drive even 2 ohms or 1 ohm.
It's always safer and easier to drive a higher impedance speaker, it just won't be as loud as a lower impedance speaker (but thats largely dependant on speaker design and sensitivity as well).

i guess i have to post something here as i have one of the most ghetto stereo setups i know.
ok, to start it off i have a chaintech AV-710 going to a jvc RX-6030V 500watt reciever over an optical cable. from there ive got athena AS-B1 bookshelf speakers for the 2 fronts. out of the reciever for the sub ive got the preout going to an old aiwa minisystem that ive done some modifications to so its now serving as a 200 watt amplifier, from that ghetto amp it goes to a alpine 10inch type E car sub in a home made box sitting under my desk. for rear speakers i just use the old front speakers from that aiwa mini system.
and now for the pictures:
first off here is the desk with my athena's and my dell p1130 21 inch crt monitor.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/grahamf/P2090044Large.jpg
then next we go to the reciever and amp.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/grahamf/P4230329Large.jpg
and finally here is a shot of the sub, you can see where it sits in the first picture.
http://i14.photobucket.com/albums/a330/grahamf/P1010079Large.jpg
for what its worth the system doesnt sound all that bad.

yeah i made the box myself. originally it was going to go into my car but to to space constraints i decided to make myself a new smaller box instead. the box didnt really take all that much time to make, expescially as i had a brand new mitre saw to play with.

When I borrow my buddies camera tonight i'll show you guys a rig up. Almost like the guy aboves, but less clean. I'm using 2 RF punch z's (cheapest lineup RF makes) in a sealed box powered by my MTX 6152 2channel amp. The 12V line is plugged in to the main power along with the remote (since the remote is 12v). I use an old computer powersupply to power it all but I don't know how I could rig a switch to make it more compact. I'll show you guys tonight, you'll laugh :). It works and actually sounds damn good. All I have right now is my camera phone so you couldn't really make out everything all too well.

Everything sits on top of the subs which face the wall. It actually sounds pretty good but it's too bad the subs don't go too low. I don't think i'd actually spend more money to get better subs at this point though, it would be slightly retarded for this generic setup. I've thought about it, oh how i've thought about it but following through is another story. I kind of wish I would have bought the Athena AS B2.2's just to hear the midbass on them. The 6.5" speakers might have improved the range a bit. Oh well, these sound damn good for the money.

aZn_plyR
05-06-2006, 10:53 AM
Well it depends on how much you want to spend, I don't think there's anything better than these for the money, 80 bucks out the door for me. :D
The Athena B1.2's, while I have not listened to myself, will be overall brighter and more detailed than the Polk's.
I am not saying bright=detailed, just brighter and more detailed than the polks :P
Anyways, the R30's were no doubt the choice for me. Since If I bought the Athena's, it would've cost more to get to my house, plus I would've needed stands for them.
Besides, if you're planning to go 5.1 down the road, the polk setup is gonna cost much less overall. Thanks to fry's and outpost sales. Athena b1.2= 240 plus shipping for 2 pairs. center= 130? or 140? = 370-380 plus shipping.
Polk setup, if you go R30's =80 R15's= 40 CSi25= 70 overall 190 plus shipping depending where you live. so almost 50% less.
BUT you gotta listen yourself. run to a bestbuy to audition the Athena's, some people order them without listening and when they get them whines that they are too bright, while others, totally love them.
BTW, I can post some more detailed pictures of the R30 close up if you like.

I ordered the athenas without listening to them and i'm not disappointed. I think anyone who jumps into speakers like this (from computer speakers) that actually have highs think they are bright. I've listened to mostly higher end car audio so that's the only thing I have to compare it to which is a bit different in the acoustics arena. I do know what I like when I hear speakers and these athenas are not bad at all. I need a little more midbass in my system and so far these athenas don't give me much but aren't too bad.

which one do u reccomend?
aZn_plyR
05-13-2006, 10:30 AM
First of all, Do NoT Rate the speakers by watts.... more watts than it can handle does not equal a bad thing. And besides, you are comparing sony's ratings....come on now, you should go see how they rate thier receivers... 100watts!! then when tested, barely 30 coming out. Ok stop with the sony's!!! PLEASE!!
The R30's ARE THE BEST floorstanding speakers you're gonna get in this pricerange new.... The sony's are in the same league as KLH speakers, which equal crap.
watts don't mean jack. You can drive the R30's with a 5 watt receiver and it'll still sound good. More power availible = better even if it exceeds the maximum of the speakers. The amp won't clip because it has more than enough juice.
The R30's luckily are still on sale, the R15's... surrounds for the R30's are on sale, 40 bucks a pair.
GRAB THEM WHILE THEY ARE STILL AVAILIBLE.
The R30's are very clear and smooth speakers.... while the sony, according to the O so many pairs my dad has, which are muddy and boomy. Which is not a good thing.
That's all I am gonna say, if you end up getting the sony's, then that's too bad, you're missing out on the best budget speakers you're gonna be getting for under 130 bucks.

good, enjoy those, I myself just got the R15's to replace the surrounds I had put together on the cheap... and the R15's sounds very nice for thier size and how much I paid for them. The sound matches the R30's very well. :D

I am thinking of grabbing the CSi25's when they go on sale or get them off new on ebay. They use the same kind of drivers as the r15's but there's two of them, same tweeters too so it should be a perfect match
