I threw out an old laptop the other day but I saved the 40g hard drive in it because It was just replaced a year ago. Instead of letting it go to waste I just bought the Nexstar 3 hard drive enclosure so I can run it off USB, and I was just wondering if I partition the drive to 2 equal partitions for 2 people is it going to cause me any problems.

So If I have 2 partitions on the drive is windows going to have trouble recognizing the two partitions running through USB?

You shouldn't have any problems. It will act like any other hard drive(from the user's perspective).

Should be fine I believe although manufacturers suggest not to (said to me by a Maxtor employee).

Why is that? Did it have to do with the drive being USB or was it just about partitioning the drive in general? I can't imagine why someone shouldn't partition a drive simply because it is a USB drive.

I have no idea, the guy at Maxtor support just said that they didn't recommend partitioning it and we ere talking about an external drive at the time.

Very strange since every drive needs to be partitioned before it can be used. Now, this can mean 1 partition or 4 partitions -- they are still partitioned, even if it is only one big one.

Sorry I probably should have put that he suggested not to create more than 1 partition on the external drive.
