My mom has a clie handheld (SJ-22 model) that she uses at work, she's an RN and uses a program she bought to check for drug interactions. She needs to update the program, and the only way to do that is to hotsync, and guess what, Sony doesn't support Windows XP x64 edition. >_<

So, wtf, am I going to have to put off upgrading my Laptop to X64 just so she can update her clie? I can understand not supporting XP x64, but at least there would be a work around or something. =\ I really don't like the prospect of having to let my mom use my laptop to update it because my laptop is for school. >_<

Anyone have any suggestions? Oh, and yeah, my mom is going to have a FIT at Sony now, it should be entertaining to watch at least... But still, this sucks. =\ If Sony doesn't support x64, are they not going to support Vista? Stupid Sony. I guess I won't spend $500 on a Sony head unit for my car now, I'll have to spend more on a JVC unit. >_<

I'm not sure if you are in the US but Sony left the PDA market a long time ago here. So I guess you are out of luck... Continuing support for a discontinued line is great and all, but I wouldn't put the blame on them if they decided not to.

I suppose that makes sense. =\ Did they pull out at the same time that they stopped making minidisc players for the US market?

Don't know.

They killed the product line around June 2004.

Sony has great support the only bad thing is they didn't use Windows Mobile which means you can't use Active Sync. I think if the product line was still alive they would have drivers but most of the Clie handhelds are at least 2 to 4 years old. I guess you're out of luck unless you can find a users group or someone that has made or hacked a driver.

 Big deal, most of the industry is just getting around to supporting XP 64. If you really want it then why not dual boot XP 32 and XP 64?

I actually do, but 32bit edition has trouble running on my hardware for some reason. =\

What kind of laptop won't run 32bit Windows properly?

It's my desktop, not my laptop. It's a dual core opteron, and it gets odd errors constantly in 32 bit windows but not 64 bit.

install a very small version of windows 2000 then, 2k runs on pretty much anything, doesnt take up as much space as xp either, if its solely for that purpose anyway.

I think Sony handhelds are slowly going out of style in the market. If your mom is going to have such a "fit" then let her call sony and complain just for the amusment of watching someone tell a massive corporation to change their plans to fit one users needs. Once she figgured out how useless that is you have two options.

Get a used computer for the sole purpose of keeping it compatable with her old handheld.
or
Get a new handheld from a different company that uses active sync and keeps in step with microsoft development.

Palm and Sony handhelds are a big pain for me at work. They don't do much of anything to stay compatable with windows. I could rant about how stupid they are with where palm and plam compatable software but that's not the point. The point is that your mom isnt going to make sony change a product line because she's mad. I would start by finding out if the software she needs to use will run on other PDA's and then work out the costs from there.

Why not focus your efforts on fixing the 32 bit install on the desktop? If the 64 bit install is working fine, it's likely something as simple as a driver update that needs to be done to get the 32 bit install working properly.

I tried that. Windows just isn't installed right, and I reinstalled the 32 bit version 5 or 6 times before giving up on it and installing x64.

Why not use a Virtual install of 2k or something?

Just too much work just to get hotsync running. =\

I set up my laptop with her software, so it works fine now. I'm trying to convince her to upgrade to a newer PDA, but she's refusing. :p
