I've got a laptop with a broken cd-rom, that doesn't support booting from a USB device. It has an existing XP install, but I'd really like to perform a clean install. It has two partitions, so I was thinking about extracting the CD onto the 2nd partition, and running the installer from there, selecting clean install with the format option. Any reason this wouldn't work?

It's XP Pro VLE that I have slipstreamed up to SP2.

Thanks

I don't think you can run a Windows install from a partition to the same drive's other partition. I think you'll need a new CD drive because sooner or later you're going to need one.

Actually I ended up doing it last night. Worked really well, the only thing you can't do is format the primary partition, because that's where it stores the temp install files.

She's got an external sony drive, so she has a CD-Rom for everything but booting.
