View Full Version : nv silencer 5 rev 3 question
hey all, i have an asus en7800gtx and i just bought an nv silencer for it
problem is that the screws arent long enough for the backplate (the L shaped one) to screw all the way in
is there any way to fix this? can i just not place the bracket on?
thanks guys

the backplate that covers the ram, uses thermal tape to attach itself on the silencer and doesn't use screws, unlike the stock cooler.

I had the same problem, I figure since the card is already upside down, it should be okay just laying on it. (although I'm not really comfortable leaving it so loose, but at least it won't fall off)
whoops...well, that thermal pad stuff is long gone, seems someone threw it away
i had some pads stuck onto the memory chips but it seems like a really crappy adhesive
i think i read that these chips are ok if they dont have any thermal padding/ cooling on them - is this true? i'll just end up running it without the backplate if it is
thanks guys

just get some ramsinks for the back and you should be fine, I wouldn't recommend running it without anything on the ram though
well, ive decided to lay the backplate down on the memory chips so they get some contact, but it is only staying there because its laying flat on the card
what ramsinks do you guys recommend? i've only heard of the swiftech, zalman, and thermtaltake ones and that many people who watercool use the swiftech for their video cards
im looking to spend around 10-15 for them, though, if i must pay mroe im willing to :p
also, i know that these memory chips can get hot, but do i NEED them? ive seen some who watercool their video cards with ramsinks, and some without em
just wondering how it goes
thanks guys

On a related note: I just got the NV silencer 5r3 as well. Is it a good idea to remove the thermal compound that comes with it in favor of AS5?

on the gpu yes but not on the ram
i always thought that stuff was AS5?
oh well, temps seem pretty good compared to before
idles at about 41, RTHDRIBL loads it up to about 60/61 max; however, this is with the silencer and an overclock of 499/1360 - i havent tested without the OC
stock fan was 52/53 idle and about 79 load with RTHDRIBL
pretty good considering 1: it exhausts air to the outside of the cfase vs the inside and 2, its damn sexy imo
:D :D :D

ok, heres a couple links for some sinks, I'd get one of the copper ones, but either will work.

I had the same prob with the backplate on my 7800gtx. The thermal tape that came with it was useless. So i ended up drilling out the holes on the backplate just a bit and using a couple of plastic tension clips that came with a northbridge heatsink. Worked like a charm!

i would only need 4 of them for the gtx and iw as thinking of using the other 4 for my dfi board (replacing the aluminum ones if that could be done)
