I am unable to map a network printer that is connected to a CUPS server on the same LAN. We just built this new CUPS server on a Dell machine and have been able to map printers on a Fedora 3,4,& 5 machine however my Debian "Etch" machine is not having any luck at all.

I am using KDE 3.5.1...

- Go to KDE Menu
- Go to Control Center
- Go to Peripherals
- Go to Printers
- Select Administration Mode button and enter Roots password
- Please see screen shots for a walk through of the process...

Check your cups error log to see if it says anything useful. You might have to bump up the logging verbosity a level or two to get what you need, though. I'm not sure if it'll make a difference, but have you tried using the cups web interface? Occasionally I'll have a problem with the kde wizard, yet the web interface works with no problems.

I thought the whole point of CUPS was to NOT have to configure printers on every machine. At least, that's how I've got it here at home...One CUPS server, and all of my FreeBSD/OS X boxes run with it...

My understanding is CUPS is what we use as our print server and I can just map to that server.

But you shouldn't need to. If your local machine is running CUPS, it should just see the broadcasted printers from the CUPS server and you should be able to use them just fine. If KDE requires you to map printers manually, why bother with CUPS at all? The whole point of CUPS is to centralize printer administration so most folks never have to mess with it. It's so nice to only have to mess with printers on one box and have the others pick up the changes automatically.
