How do you measure decibels? I'm thinking about buying a new system (The Velocity Micro GE1500 looks nice) but I'd like to compare the noise against my current box. I'd like to get something that isn't too much louder.

We use a decibel meter - looks like a microphone with a flattened body. I can tell you that the GE 1500 is a fairly quiet system and is a MAJOR improvement over what we've seen from Velocity Micro in the past. What noise it does produce is pleasant and more like wind noise than an annoying whine or whir.

What you showed him is an SPL meter, not what he is looking for.

Just turn everything off around your current pc and listen, then compare. You don't need to know exactly how many decibels of sound the thing is putting out. Its just a little anal.

If you MUST. Go to rat shack (radio shack) and get a decibel meter.
