I have two identical hdd and one seems to be roughly 32 times slower than the other drive. Both hard drives are WD2500s. I am not exaggerating. Anyway I've had the fast one for a few months and the slow one I purchased just recently. I posted some other issues I had with the drive here (http://www.hardforum.com/showthread.php?t=1022895) but never got an answer. I'm about to give up on this drive and unfortunately theres no possibility of returning it. Please help me if you can think of. If you need any more info ask.

WD should have diagnotic software utilities that come with the drive. It should be able to read the S.M.A.R.T. data. Do you have S.M.A.R.T. enabled? Also, if you don't have the utility disk, you can find it online or use Ulitimate Boot CD (should have the utility on there).

'Western Digital Data Lifeguard Diagnostics', a DOS utility, can be downloaded from the WD site and installed to either floppy or CD. Instructions are clear and complete.

Hope this helps!

I've already run it. The SMART test says pass as does the quick diagnostic. The extended test would take 30 hours to complete so I'm not really keen on doing that. A couple of days ago I usd the full erase option and reformatted. It took around 32.5 hours to complete, but I let it finish. Obviously it didn't help. The reason I'm not to keen on doing the extended test is the hard drive is in my file server and I have all my data on it. If I do anything with the drive CPU usage spikes to 100% for the duration, so my data becomes inacessible.

Does anything change if you connect the hard drive to a different port or controller? What about in a different computer?

Feel stupid for not having tried that. I'll connect it to my workstation and let you know.
