Our computers at work have developed this problem since we made the new image for the new Dell Machines. OS is Windows 2000 Professional.

We usually set the PCs up to log in as "user".

However, it will occassionally log in as "user.pcname". The PC Name is not always the current PC name, but the old PC name (a generic name used for setting up the PC).

I've seen this before when I was running 2000 Server...but this was back in 2000/2001...and I don't remember what the fix for it was.

Any thoughts?

Was there already a 'username' on the PC while the old PC name was assigned?
I usually see those problems when the domain is renamed/changed or there is the same username both locally and on the domain

like on mytest server, I have 'Administrator' and I also have Administrator.PCNAME, ones local and the others the domain account

They may be set up for a domain when we receive them, but our group doesn't use domains when we send them out.

I will take a look at that and see if that seems to be the issue.
