of course you can build a nas by loading windows on a computer and sharing the drives.

but does anyone know of any solutions that can be bootable off a cd/dvd or usb pen?

Depends on what you're looking for. There have been several other threads here in the past about the same thing. Here are a few ideas from them:

Something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=33-124-036&depa=0) plus some USB drives.

Something like this (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.asp?Item=N82E16822155309) that already has a drive build in (these come in varying sizes from smaller than this up to multi TB raids).

Several linux distros like this (http://www.openfiler.com/) (wait for 2.0 release), and this (http://linux.lorma.edu/main/) would do the trick also.

As far as booting from a CD/DVD or flash drive, look for a linux live cd with the features you want or get a mobo that can boot from USB and install your distro/os to that flash drive. Do some searching in this forum (nas or home nas, for example) and you will find more of what you are looking for. Good luck.

Clarkconnect was another good option, but I'm not sure it's being developed anymore.
