View Full Version : Reformating a Dell with Raid?

I have a Dell Gen4 computer, and I called Dell tech to ask about completely reformating my computer - he gave me the OK ( I was just making sure it wouldn't void my warranty) but said that I should make sure I slip-stream the latest XP service pack (SP2B) to make sure it installs my raid correctly.
I searched everywhere for Sp2B, but I can't even find proof that it exists....Is there a service pack that supports Raid for XP?
If not, how would I go about finding what drivers to install for my raid setup? Since Dell just partitions their hardrives with all the windows files/default drivers, they didn't supply any disks and I have no idea where to begin to find them on my own. Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Ummm, as far as I know, you don't need SP2 to install RAID.
What you need are the RAID drivers from your Mobo/Chipset maker. For example, I have an Asus A8N-SLI Premium mobo, which came with a cd containing the RAID drivers. I copied them onto a floppy and then I install them before I install Windows by hitting the F6 key during installation (you will see it on the bottom of the screen).
So.... I suggest you go to your mobo maker's website and find the appropriate RAID drivers.

i think what the guy might have been getting at is that the new SP when slipstreamed in might include the drivers for your mobo's raid by default, tho i'm not sure if that is the case, just providing a possible answer :)
still all you should need are the mobo's raid drivers on floppy for when windows asks for them at the start of the install.

It will not allow you to do a clean install of Windows if the boot drive is in a RAID if you don't have the drivers handy. It'll just abort and go back to your current install. Still, get 'em on a floppy for sure before you start.

Right. I know you have to have your drivers on disk. What I'm asking is, how would I go about finding what raid drivers to put on floppy for my Dell? I don't know what mobo/chip to download drivers for. How would I find out?
Service tag on back of pc. Use the tag # at dell's site to find the info and drivers.
