View Full Version : I thought drives weren't supposed to be mounted at an angle...

Saw this pic the other day of an apple computer, and depending on how much the screen is tilted the hard drive inside would be tilted also

To my knowledge this is not a good thing, and I have read from hard drive manufacturers that hard drives should not be mounted at an angle of greater than 15 degrees, although 90 degrees is fine. I'm pretty sure I read that on one of their sites but I can't find where I read it..

so, is this a myth or are apple's hard drives mounted incorrectly?

yeah.. i thought about that too when i saw those macs... i am pretty sure they use laptop drives though.. and i have seen people flip laptops over and shit when they are running. (i locked up a 3.5incher by moving it sideways when running..

on 2nd thought.. that drive appears to be a 3.5, assuming the thing to the right of it is an optical drive..

It's either a Maxtor or WD 3.5" drive. I know that chassis, but can't remember if it's Maxtor or WD off the top of my head, and don't want to pop any of my rigs open to find out. Pretty sure WD.

I duno about laptop drives. I had to put my dad's in here because his CD Drive died and he had to reformat. I put it in at an angle, and it detected his Toshiba drive as a Torhba@ drive :p

It is not a myth. If I remeber right a bunch of the early g5 imacs had hd failures because of that. I know I saw my fair share. Not sure what apple ever did about it. I believe newer drives have less of a problem as drives of years ago but I'm no expert in that area.

It's a late-model Maxtor SATA 'square-board' drive.
