So up till now havent been having any issues with the Seagate SATA150 drives both of the non-NCQ and NCQ variety. Lately its been the 80GB SATA150/NCQ (ST380817AS) drives. Now we are getting orders of the newer ST380811AS drives..and I am seeing quite a few problems with these drives, on a wide variety of SATA controllers. SiS and Via onboard controllers for sure, haven't had time to throw it onto a nvidia, adaptec, or highpoint (although I will).

With Sis the drives are detected fine, however, they are slow to show the format ntfs quick or std screen with XP setup and then they fail trying to format the drive.

The VIA controllers just come up with a hardware failure whenever the drive is connected.

Like I said I haven'd had a chance to check on a nvidia, adaptec, or highpoint, but I will on Monday, just wondering if anyone has seen these types of issues yet. I know these drives are relatively new, and it is probably going to be something resolved in firmware.

EDIT: This has been tested with 4 different drives (same model).

Tried the drives on a MSI Neo SLI/F and still got an error on formatting the drive with the windows partition.

I had a similar problem with a pair of 40GB 7200.7, I was trying to format only part of the disk. The solution was a full format by giving windows setup the WHOLE DISK, I tried this over and and and it worked everytime.

I appreciate the advise, but that wasn't it. Apparently the backward compatibility aspect of SATA300 drives is leaving alot to be desired. I have heard the the latest drivers from nvidia will make these drives work, I am downloading them right now so testing is forthcoming. But other problems have been reported with Samsung Spinpoint Sata300 drives.
