View Full Version : Disabling the Shimgvw.dll (WMF exploit workaround) Caused BSOD's on 2 pc's

So this one has me scratching my head. I work for IT at a business, and I support about 300 users. During the whole WMF thing, I pushed out a command to unregister the shimgvw.dll as per Microsoft's advice. When I did that, 2 machines in here out of the 300 or so got a problem.

On bootup, when they enter their novell username/password, they get a bluescreen 50-75% of the time. Sometimes they get in fine, sometimes they bluescreen. Same issue with both users started the same time I unregistered that DLL. They seem to get an error message in WinLogon.exe prior to the BSOD.

Two totally different hardware builds. One user has WinXP SP1, the other is on WinXP SP2.

I re-registered the DLL for them a few days ago (And the rest of the corp. today), and they still have the problem.

Any thoughts?

Incidently, they can login "workstation only" which skips the novell login. They can then use the Novell software to login to novell normally. I'm thinking first step is to re-install the novell client. I just wanted to put this out to you guys and see if ANYONE saw anything similiar.

When the BOSD come up what file is it complaining about? If you see it happens to be a driver or somethign update that driver. Other wise let us know and maybe we can help more.
