Utorrent (torrents): no installation, small ... low cpu cycle use, low memory use
peer guardian :newer versions are low on resources
trillian: back in the day this was noted for saving memory (is their a better client?

basically:
1. what's the best aim/msn combined client for speed
2. what's the best antivirus software for small background footprint (low mem/cpu use)
3. whats the best firewall (not including peer guardian)

i use antivir, its ok.. and i use zone alarm.. anything better then this?

is their a way to slim down firefox?

1. Don't know. GAIM, maybe? I know it supports AIM, MSN, Yahoo, IRC, and others.
2. NOD-32. Best ever.
3. I like Sygate Personal Firewall, personally. Norton just bought it up, so you'd better get it before it goes to shit. I hear Kerio Personal Firewall is good, too.

1. Miranda
2. AntiVir
3. SP2 Firewall

At the host-level using an outbound filtering firewall doesn't help security in any way. So just stick with the XP firewall. It is definitely the lowest on system resources.
