View Full Version : Video Codecs Problem

Wasn't sure which area this was supposed to go in, but this seemed the most likely.

I'm having some terrible video problems after having installed some codec packs and now my videos look like ass. By that I mean, the colors are bleeding (and so are my eyes), contrast is way too high, brightness.. tint.. pretty much the only thing that IS right is the alignment. I guess I can't complain as long as the video is right side up, yeah?

Anyway, I'm admittedly a n00b as far as managing my codecs goes. Before you ask, yes, I've already tried uninstalling them. It didn't have any effect. Also, not only have I uninstalled the codec packs themselves, but I went through Star > Settings > Control Panel > Sound and Audio Devices, and I removed EVERY video codec from my system, and now I'm trying to run videos purely through a non-DirectShow player, such as mplayer, with no luck. ALL video files are still displaying these issues. Whatever changes have been made are deeper than that... I'm really not sure what to do at this point.

These are the codec packs I was experimenting with:

K-Lite Mega Codec Pack 1.47
CCCP - Combined Community Codec Pack (2005-12-21)
FFDSHOW (not really a codec pack, but I was told it was good...)

Thanks in advance.

It just might be your video card. I don't think it has much to do with the OS itself. Perhaps clean up your system with a newer video driver.

Wow. I just downloaded the new forceware drivers, and you were right. All that BS I went through, all for nothing. Just had to reinstall the video drivers.

Man, you are a god. Thank you.

That bothers me though... how the hell could a codec pack screw up my video drivers? And why do the video drivers have anything to do with an .avi file? I thought they were just for rendering 3d stuff.

There's a lot of factors as to how it could screw up your drivers. It's possible that one of the codec pack was not written very well that it alters the way video drivers and codecs communicate with each other. Perhaps the codec pack replaced one or more of your video driver's .dll files. I like K-Lite's, BTW. They've never really given me an issue but you have given me a clue as to why sometimes my games come up with nv4_disp.dll error once in a while. Just might be the codec itself. :)

Video cards handle both 2D and 3D. It handles everything based on what outputs on your screen. It's logical that it would handle AVI's too. Video drivers already have included the most basic codecs to run the most common videos out there (usually optimized to play with their own brand of video card). The codec packs you're downloading simply adds more codecs to the library and sometimes in your case, replaces them. The bleeding you're seeing is probably due to incompatibility. Usually done by lack of testing by the codec writer.
